Prairie Grass – A Guided Visualization

by Jeff Lutes, SOYA, Co-Owner of Chinook Yoga Studio in Prince George, BC

Prairie GrassBe seated in a meditative pose. Calm your mind. Take a deep through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Relax

Now-Imagine you are sitting in a clearing in a field of tall prairie grass. The sky is deep brilliant blue, the sun is behind you illuminating your vision. The field is infinite, it extends well beyond the horizon of your mind’s eye. The grass, about your height, has large grain buds bending the stalk of each blade. There is a moderate breeze swaying the grass back and forth.

Now- focus on the grass as a whole. See how the blades and the grain buds move back and forth in the breeze. Notice how the noise rustles in the wind as they entangle and disentangle into one another, swaying back and forth.

Breathe this vision into your body, take the strength of the wind and the flexibility of the blades of grass into your body.

Now-fix your gaze to one blade of grass. Look to the ground. Gaze to where the blades of grass and the earth meet. Notice how solid the base of the grass is, it moves, subtly, but it maintains its rooting to the earth. Start to move your gaze up the blade. Notice where the pauses in its growth process have occurred. These pauses provide the strength for the next level of growth. Look closer; see the vertical grain of the blade of grass. These vertical grains provide flexibility.

Breathe this vision into your body, take this strength and flexibility into your body through prana.

Focus now to the grain buds on the top of the blade of grass. These buds have blossomed. Notice how many threads there are to each bud. Now, see the blade of grass as a whole. Notice how it, on its own, blows back and forth, notice how the top, with the heavy weight of blossoms of future growth move, almost radically back and forth in the breeze. There is now a pause in the breeze. For a moment the heavy top comes back to center............. Move down again with your gaze and see how the energy moves throughout the blade from top to bottom.

Breathe this vision into your body. See yourself within this vision

Now-bring your focus back out to the field as a whole, keep the vision of strength and flexibility of the one blade of grass and project that into the field as a whole. See the energy movement of each blade transfer to the next as it takes the force from wind for movement and the earth for grounding. Take this energy and breath it in. Hold your breath on your next inhalation for a few seconds to absorb this. Exhale.

Feel the energy of this vision in your body. Now open your eyes with a gentle gaze to the earth. You are now ready to begin your yoga practice.
