Sacred Words of Power

300 hur yoga teacher training, mantra, kirtan, sanskrit, hindu, mythology, yoga mythologyThis module explores the transformative power of sacred language, sound, and song through the wisdom pathways of Bhakti, Mantra, Nada, and Raja Yoga. Building on the 200 hour foundation lessons in meditation and Sanskrit, we deepen our study of the sacred language of yoga and its direct relationship to the Subtle Body. 

Together, we will engage with wisdom found in traditional yoga practices, gain insight and respect for the language of Sanskrit, and dive more into the wisdom, love and guidance that is found in the mythology of the Hindu pantheon, which is deeply interwoven into the teachings of yoga.

Learning Objectives

  1. Learning Objectives for Understanding Mantras, Words of Power

    1. Understand the various types of mantras, such as bija, abstract, and mantras for Deities
    2. Know the Ajapa Gayatri Mantra
    3. Understand the relationship of Sanskrit to the chakras
    4. Understand the concept of nyasa
    5. Know the use of the endings namaha and svaha
    6. Know the precaution for saying mantras for others
    7. Know how to create a “stack of mantras”
  2. Learning Objectives for the Mythology of Yoga  

    1. Understand why there are so many deities in Hindu Mythology  
    2. Know that there is still only one ultimate God in Hinduism  
    3. Learn about the various deities and their qualities  
    4. Know that each deity represents a quality or qualities of the Divine 
  3. Learning Objectives for Sanskrit Pronunciation and Writing   

    1. Understand the basic pronunciation of the Sanskrit Devanāgarī Alphabet (varṇa mālā, or garland of letters)  
    2. Be familiar with the Rules for Sanskrit Writing in Devanāgarī  
    3. Be able to write in Sanskrit Devanagari script according to the rules (this will not be on the exam, nor necessary by memory, but enough to understand the process of writing in the script)  
    4. Understand the importance of diacritic marks on the transliterations  Know and be able to pronounce some key Sanskrit terms and asanas

Course Details

Every 20 HR training module includes 10 hours of standard daily components and 10 hours of synchronous lesson components. Non-contact lesson components vary based on estimated homework hours. 

  • Sanskrit – 2.5 hours
  • Mantra, Nyasa, Meditation – 4 hours
  • Mythology – 3.5 hours
  • Homework lessons to complete – 10 hours
  • Suggested prerequisite: SOYA 200hr Foundations Meditation lesson or equivalent
  • Suggested readings: Stories Behind the Poses, Dr. Raj Balkaran
